Audio, 2020
This vocal project deals with the phenomenon of urban silence, examining how public spaces shape their surroundings by silencing marginalized voices through the implementation of urban furniture—such as anti-homeless benches in parks and surface spikes against skateboarding. Despite its critical role in defining public space access and ownership, the current architectural adoption remains surprisingly subtle, implicit, and mundane, often escaping casual observation.
This audio piece specifically concentrates on the benches situated in Cologne, particularly those near the Rhein River, where the intersection of private luxury apartments and public spaces unfolds. The project closely observes how this area is meticulously designed to foster exclusion, shedding light on the subtle yet profound impact of architectural choices on the dynamics of public spaces.
